Life and Legacy of John Paul Meyer

We honor the life and legacy of John Paul Meyer (1935–2026), a devoted leader, community builder, and champion for those in need. Through decades of ministry, including more than 20 years at St. Peter’s Church in Detroit, John brought people together to create meaningful, lasting change rooted in compassion and service.

John played a pivotal role in the founding of Alternatives For Girls, opening the doors of St. Peter’s to provide space, support, and guidance during its earliest days. His leadership helped lay the groundwork for what AFG has become today, a comprehensive organization supporting girls and young women through shelter, housing, education, and outreach. His impact continues to be felt in every life touched by this work.

John Paul Meyer devoted his life to faith, service, and community. As rector of St. Peter’s Church of Detroit, he helped transform the parish into a hub of compassion and action, supporting a wide range of ministries that uplifted Corktown neighborhood and beyond.

Among his most lasting contributions was his leadership in supporting Alternatives For Girls in its earliest days, opening the church’s doors, offering guidance, and helping build the foundation for what would become a vital, multi-service organization serving girls and young women. His legacy lives through the countless lives touched by his generosity, vision, and unwavering commitment to others.
