Matching Donation Helps Secure AFG’s Future!

Oct. 15 2014

Your support for Alternative For Girl’s essential work with Detroit-area homeless and high-risk girls and young women can be doubled, thanks to a matching gift from The Rush Group, a Michigan-based automotive supply and trucking company, and the group’s CEO Andra Rush.

The Rush Group, which operates Dakkota Integrated Systems, Detroit Manufacturing Systems and Rush Trucking Company, will match donations that you make toward our year-end appeal, up to $200,000, from October 15th, 2014, through January 31, 2015.  This year-end appeal is a pivotal component in our quest to complete the entire campaign by the end of March.

Ms. Rush believes in the power of giving back and supports programs in Detroit that help transform the lives of people who are often forgotten. President Barack Obama recognized her during his 2014 State of the Union address for opening in 2012 a new auto supply plant on Detroit’s west side – the city’s first factory opening in decades – and hiring nearly 600 unemployed or underemployed residents.

The matching gift specifically supports “Securing the Future: A Campaign For AFG” to keep us strong, serving Detroit’s girls and young women as long as they need us.

We launched the Campaign in 2011 to provide positive alternatives for girls to help those living in high-risk circumstances find alternative paths to make their dreams of the future a reality through services such as educational opportunities, employment resources, college and career guidance, skill development for safe and positive relationships, and a supportive network.

AFG is proud to announce the finale of our Campaign, which concludes on March 31, 2015. To date, generous donors have pledged and given 92% of our goal of $6.2 million! We are almost there – and now, we need your help.

The Campaign’s purpose is simple, yet critical: Ensure AFG’s long-term health and fiscal stability, so that we can continue to serve Detroit’s homeless and high-risk girls and young women. We must be certain that AFG can:

  • Pay our bills; when grant reimbursements are late
  • Maintain our facility as planned, reducing emergency repairs; most especially in our Shelter for homeless girls and young women
  • Save some money to ensure that we can sustain and grow our programs in the short term – to keep our core programs going in the case of sudden grant shortfalls – and in the long term – in the form of an endowment that will generate reliable revenue year after year.

This is a remarkable opportunity that will allow your gift to secure our current program success AND the future for AFG, and for the girls and women we serve. Our dedicated Campaign Committee co-chairs, Jim and Ann Nicholson, and Fritz and Karen Henderson, along with the committee and AFG board members, have worked diligently to secure every private dollar possible, especially with the reduction of public funds available for our critical work. We are very grateful for all campaign gifts that will bring us to our goal of $6.2 million.

At Alternatives For Girls, we do work that no one else in Detroit is doing, and we work with girls and young women who have been through circumstances that many are unable to imagine. Our compassionate staff and volunteers provide critical support, whether we are serving a homeless young woman, a teen at risk of becoming a victim of sex trafficking, or a girl struggling to perform well in school, so that they can all make positive choices that will improve – and maybe even save – their lives now and in the future. Alternatives For Girls MUST be here, able and strong, to provide the services that Detroit’s homeless and high-risk girls and young women need every day. This is why our “Securing the Future” campaign is so very important. Please consider making a donation – your gift will enable AFG to fulfill our mission now and in the future.
