Safe, secure housing is critical to an individual’s personal growth and success, particularly in times of trauma and stress.
AFG empowers and supports young women, ages 18-24, and their families in obtaining and maintaining safe housing. Through personalized support by AFG staff and help accessing the critical resources and services including employment and educational support, physical and mental health services, and independent living skills.
To achieve this, we partner with Detroit’s Coordinated Assessment Model (CAM) and accept all referrals of homeless individuals and families up to age 24. Rental and utility assistance is provided through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and AFG staff maintain close contact with families to ensure each one’s housing stability.
New Affordable Housing
Also, to help meet the need for affordable housing in Detroit, AFG is a strong partner in the Dr. Maya Angelou Village, which opened in the summer of 2024. The same supportive services AFG provides in our shelter are offered to families in the northwest Detroit location. Services include an Early Childhood Education Center for residents and the community.
